Due to lack of university level study programmes in museology in Sub Saharan Africa, a Postgraduate Diploma Course has been established, as an activity of the PMDA, through a signed agreement between the PMDA, the University of Nairobi, ICCROM, the University of London and the National Museums of Kenya.
The course shall provide skills and competencies to enable museum workers to contribute to the effective management and conservation of museum and heritage collections and to providing leadership to the profession in Africa.

To qualify for admission into this course, the candidate must be holder of a relevant degree from the University of Nairobi or from other institutions recognized by the University of Nairobi senate and be a staff member of a Museum or other heritage institution from the countries covered by the PMDA, whose responsibilities include conservation, care and use of collection with a working experience of at least 3 years.
The inaugural course started on 30th September 2002 and ends on June 13th 2003. It has brought together 12 participants from Ethiopia, Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. This 9 months course will be held at the PMDA every two years and the Postgraduate Diploma will be conferred by the University of Nairobi.
