PMDA 1st Programme Review and Development Meeting
August 11-17, 2002
25 directors and senior professionals from museums and heritage institutions in West Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean islands met to review the PMDA Building Phase (2000-2002) and to set priority arrears for future PMDA activities and partnerships.
Summary of Recommendations
As this young institution prepares to undertake long-term programmes … the participants strongly recommend that PMDA:
- Continue to develop projects and activities for heritage and museum development in Africa
- Mobilize the necessary financial and technical resources to carry out the five-year Children in African Museums Project starting in 2003
- Further develop and implement a five-year plan of actions with the development of activities based especially on the following four priority issues:
(a) Conservation and Heritage Management
(b) Exhibitions
(c) Institutional Management
(d) Communities and the Museum
- Amplify the institution's mandate beyond museums to encompass all heritage;
- Strengthen links with other regional heritage bodies and programmes (such as Africa 2009,AFRICOM, CAM, EPA, SAMA, WAMP).
The meeting noted that the success of PMDA depends on the support of the professionals, Institutions and governments that benefit from its programmes and activities. The meeting participants committed themselves to taking responsibility to collectively support PMDA through a number actions that were identified by the meeting.
Finally, the participants expressed thanks for the valuable contributions of a number of partners that are providing technical, financial and moral support to PMDA and encourages them to continue and strengthen such support.
