EN-COMPASS: KENYA IN-COUNTRY TRAINING WORKSHOP IN PROGRESS
This training, which is the primary year-two activity for the En-Compass project is currently on-going at the CHDA premises. Participants include 18 heritage practitioners from Kenya, Zambia, South Africa, Uganda, Seychelles, Zanzibar, Morocco and the Republic of Sudan. The training, beginning on Monday 28th November 2011 shall run for two weeks ending on Friday 9th December 2011.
Some of the objectives of the training include:
- Increased knowledge and skills in the management, interpretation and protection of cultural heritage locally and internationally
- Understanding of the role of culture and heritage in promoting social cohesion and in eradicating discrimination within society
- Understanding the role of culture and heritage in social and economic development of society, especially in alleviating poverty through sustainable tourism and other cultural enterprises
- Knowledge of fundraising and partnerships development for heritage conservation
The training workshop is being coordinated by peter Okwaro, the Coordinator for the Movable Heritage Programme at CHDA with the lead facilitator being Prof. Peter Stone, the Head of School of Arts and Cultures, Newcastle University, UK, who is supported by Dr. Herman Kiriama, Patrick Abungu, Aghan Odero Agan, and Ms. Sarah Forde as external resource persons.
At the end of the training, participants will produce and submit an individual plan to show how they intend to 'cascade' what they have learnt to others in their regions through local (and possibly national) training initiatives.
