In October 2011, DOT Kenya entered into a partnership with the Centre for Heritage Development in Africa to offer ReachUp! training in the old town community of Mombasa, Kenya.

Nasma Malik took the ReachUp! program and has now joined DOT to deliver it as an Intern.

It's here that we met with Nasma Malik, a member of Old Town Community Health Workers group. The group is made of volunteers who hail from the Old Town location in Mombasa and coordinate activities from the Centre for Heritage Development in Africa.

Nasma successfully enrolled in ReachUp! training and volunteered to be the class secretary. During the training she would often assist the others who had no idea on how to operate a computer.

As a facilitator of the program, I noticed her passion to help the others. When DOT Kenya announced internship opportunities in the month of November I encouraged her and others to apply.

Nasma was successful! She is now undergoing training to facilitate DOT's ReachUp! program herself. Nasma says she is grateful to DOT Kenya; the ReachUp! program has empowered her to know how to seize opportunities and market herself.

Nasma advises fellow youth to embrace all opportunities for acquiring knowledge. "I would like to urge all youth to take education seriously especially programs such a DOT's ReachUp! - that enhances life," she says. Nasma is thankful to her facilitator Samwel Kamiri who she says mentored her and encouraged her throughout the interview process.

In total, 10 of the 78 most recently recurited DOT Kenya Interns were previously enrolled in DOT's ReachUp! program. They are:

Damaris Maina
Boniface Simon
Nellius Irungu
Bernadette Achieng
Duncan Lumumba
Nasma Malik
Athman Mwidau
Susan Kamande
Joseph Kithundu
Pauline Ndung'u

Congratulations to these new DOT Kenya Interns! The ReachUp! program helps people use technology to broaden their horizons and realize the opportunities around them. Now these young leaders will have the opportunity to spread the knowlege they have learned in DOT's programs to their peers all around Kenya.
