Development of PMDA’s future programme:
A one-week meeting to be held in August 2002 will bring together Museum and heritage directors and other senior professionals from countries covered by the PMDA, PMDA’s board members and representatives from existing and potential technical and funding partners to review PMDA’s field of coverage, mandate, and its building phase objectives, achievements, operations and activities and formulate and adopt a five-year PMDA programme of activities for the period 2003 to 2008. This planning meeting supported by the Netherlands Ministry of Development Cooperation.

To prepare for the development of PMDA’s future programme, two projects, also, supported by the Netherlands Ministry of Development Cooperation are being undertaken.

  1. A museum conditions, resources and developmental needs assessment project was initiated in November 2001 to define a clear picture of the current conditions, resources and development needs of museums in English speaking Africa and to get a quantitative and qualitative estimation of related staff training and development support needs. This information will be used in the development of PMDA programme of activities for the period 2003 to 2008.
  2. PMDA held a workshop in November 2001 to evaluating the current quality of children’s programming in the museums of sub-Saharan Africa and make recommendations for the formulation of a five-year programme proposal to address the needs of this special audience. The programme proposal is being developed and will be submitted to PMDA’s August 2002 planning meeting for consideration and adoption. The programme, when adopted, will be implemented by PMDA, individual museums, and other partners between 2003 and 2008.
